School of Human Nursing
Welcome to the School of Human Nursing
Nursing is a specialized field that seeks ways to assist people in living as humanly as possible in terms of daily health and needs. Our school was established in 2003 to foster personnel capable of contributing to society through nursing.
In Japan, higher levels of education and knowledge are expected in the nursing field, mainly due to the advancements of medical care and changes in the social structures in recent decades. The school intends to educate students who will play a central role in nursing practice, understand human beings and their health problems from various viewpoints, and solve these problems. Through lectures, seminars, and practical training, students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the human being, ethical manner, precise judgement, creativity, and knowledge and skills to provide nursing care based on advanced nursing science.
History
| 1950 | April | The Junior College of Shiga Prefecture was founded, with a Technical Department and Liberal Arts. |
| 1971 | April | The Nursing Department was established at the Junior College of Shiga Prefecture. |
| 1995 | April | The University of Shiga Prefecture was founded, as was its Department of Environmental Science, Engineering, and Human Cultures. 1996 March The Junior College of Shiga Prefecture was closed. |
| 1996 | April | The College of Nursing was opened at the University of Shiga Prefecture. |
| 2003 | April | The School of Human Nursing at the University of Shiga Prefecture was opened. |
| 2005 | March | The College of Nursing was closed. |
| 2007 | April | The Graduate School of Human Nursing was opened. |
| 2010 | April | The Certified Nurse Specialist program for chronic care nursing began at the Graduate School of Human Nursing. |
| 2019 | March | The elective midwifery course at the undergraduate level was closed. |
| 2019 | April | The Certified Nurse Specialist program for home care nursing began at the Graduate School of Human Nursing. Midwifery education was upgraded to the master's level at the Graduate School of Human Nursing. |
Department of Human Nursing
Our department is composed of the following four domains:
- Nursing for basic/comprehensive knowledge and skills: fundamental nursing in theories, skills, and management
- Nursing for child health and development: maternal and pediatric nursing
- Nursing for adults' and older adults' health: critical care nursing, chronic care nursing, palliative care nursing, and gerontological nursing
- Nursing for the humanities and people living in the community: psychiatric/mental health nursing, home care nursing, and public health nursing.
Our students first take general education and foundation of medical science classes. They also begin basic nursing studies to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills. Based on this, they further study specialized areas of nursing according to different developmental stage and health needs. In the final year, students integrate their knowledge and skills, acquire research and practice competencies, and broaden their perspectives not only locally but also internationally.
All students are eligible to take the national examination of nurses upon graduation. Only those who completed the elective course for public health nursing are qualified to take the national examination of public health nurses. A limited number of transfer students are accepted annually. Students who successfully complete all required credits will receive a bachelor's degree in nursing.
